Detailed Information

The University of Queensland Institute of Modern Languages (UQ-IML) has been a trailblazer in language education since its inception in 1934 by the University of Queensland Senate. Offering a diverse range of over 80 courses in 30 different languages, IML creates a supportive and practical learning environment for adults seeking to explore the world, acquire new language skills, or enhance existing linguistic abilities. Emphasizing cross-cultural communication, IML strives to enrich lives by welcoming the community into the University through the art of language acquisition.

Central to IML-UQ’s philosophy is the belief that education is an enduring voyage accessible to all. Employing a communicative teaching approach, the institute addresses all four language proficiency areas – speaking, listening, reading, and writing – within authentic contexts that foster collaborative learning. Staffed by proficient tutors who are either native speakers or possess native-level fluency, IML delivers language programs that are open to the general public at an affordable rate, without the requirement of enrollment in a degree program.

Beyond language instruction, IML offers NAATI certified translation services in more than 80 languages, establishing a tangible connection between the University, the corporate world, and the wider community. By nurturing relationships with former UQ students and alumni, IML ensures that individuals can maintain a meaningful engagement with the university even after their formal studies have ended. Committed to advancing cultural awareness and language proficiency, IML continues to play a crucial role in today’s diverse and multicultural society.
