Detailed Information

Established in 1997, the Language Resource Centre is a premier independent language learning institution based in the UK. Its primary mission is to foster self-study language learning and promote cross-cultural communication within Newcastle University and the North East region. The Centre, a cross-faculty service within the HaSS faculty, offers free language learning facilities to university staff and students, supporting independent language learning and tandem learning in over 100 languages.

Unlike traditional language tuition, the Centre focuses on empowering individuals to learn languages at their own pace. In 2014, a major refurbishment transformed the reading room in the Old Library Building into a cutting-edge study center. Aligned with the University’s ‘Languages for All’ policy, the Centre emphasizes accessibility and inclusivity in language learning, providing a wide range of self-study resources to its members.

Member satisfaction is paramount at the Language Resource Centre, which actively seeks feedback and encourages open communication with users. By fostering a supportive learning environment and offering resources in multiple languages, the Centre is dedicated to empowering individuals to enhance their language skills and engage in meaningful cross-cultural communication.
