Detailed Information

The Pediatric Language Clinic (PLC) is a specialized program provided by UTHSC, focusing on family-centered early intervention for children aged birth-to-three years who need tailored services due to social, communication, behavior delays, or a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The clinic follows a curriculum crafted to assist Speech-Language Pathologists and graduate students in targeting appropriate skill sets and offering necessary supports for learning in various settings. Supported by the Tennessee Department of Education as an Early Intervention Resource Agency (EIRA), PLC operates at zero cost to families who meet Tennessee’s Early Intervention System (TEIS) eligibility criteria.

At PLC, a team approach is highlighted to aid young children, with Speech-Language Pathologists/Early Interventionists working closely with families, TEIS service coordinators, and other professionals to ensure optimal service provision. Family engagement is crucial to the program, with caregivers engaging in weekly sessions, contributing to the development of Individualized Family Service Plans, and aiding in setting specific goals for their children. Developmental therapy services are provided in natural environment settings, customized to meet the unique needs of each child and family.

PLC provides center-based groups, home-based services specialized for children with autism, and consultation visits for families within the East Tennessee TEIS District. Furthermore, UTHSC delivers speech-language services for children with ASD aged 3-21, concentrating on cultivating functional communication skills to improve social interactions, academic performance, and behavioral development. Committed to enhancing life’s connections through effective communication, PLC and UTHSC’s Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology strive to bridge the gap between practice and research, ensuring optimal outcomes for their patients and students.
